How to know your Nuvi?

GPS map> The updates include an impressive amount of information. The normal GPS users quickly become accustomed to all this information at hand, and often find it annoying if some details missing. But the ride with a GPS for the first time is often a truly remarkable experience. The device is always "know" where you are, what lies before us, and how to go where you want to get - and it tells you.

It 'easy, sometimes, to forget where it allthat "knowledge" is. Information on roads, services and points of interest all have to be entered manually, by people from driving on roads, conducting investigations and recording of data. In this regard, the GPS maps are no different from paper maps. They represent a snapshot, and over time can become obsolete.

The downtown street grid of a city can be a very small change over the years. But the traffic patterns and drivingThe restrictions may change. The calculations can be one-way and detours are set. Freeway on ramps and exits can be opened or closed. In more developed areas, this new road network does not change and expand all the time.

But the streets are just the beginning. Apart from the actual maps, GPS navigators contain many layers of additional information. Business locations and service are stored in your GPS can change from day to day. New surveys always reveal new pointsof interest because something has changed, or because certain information was never collected.

If you think about it, you probably know many ways, your city or region has changed in recent years. Your GPS should know about these changes.

GPS Map Updates

Drivers who need to invest in expensive GPS navigators now better and more up-to-date maps and information, and manufacturerstry to answer. Unfortunately, the issuance of new GPS updates for specific brands and models is sometimes unpredictable. You can see the purchase of a new device with the preinstalled mapping software, only for the new software as soon after release. This is related to the cost of mapping updates is a frequent source of irritation for GPS users.

To understand why this is happening, it helps to know something about the process of collecting GPS data. Managers GPSas the contract with companies like Garmin mapping from Navteq to provide geographic information at his disposal. The survey and mapping the various companies continue to re-inspection areas and update their databases accordingly.

Data collection for the new maps is a process that requires time and expensive. And once the information is collected, you may need a little 'for GPS manufacturers to convert their specific software formats and produce GPS updates (infor download or DVD) for distribution.

But like everything else in the world of GPS, this expansion process of data collection and product development is to improve production. Increasingly, companies and manufacturers of GPS mapping priority areas for updating based on customer feedback.

Updates for GPS Garmin, Magellan, TomTom and other famous brands are now more frequent, and contain new information. Garmin GPS MapUpdates, for example, are now published quarterly. Each update includes better coverage of more than 60 major metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada, and six million points of interest to date.

Other companies are experimenting with new strategies to keep their software, GPS maps and databases as current as possible. TomTom has recently introduced the technology in their MapShare GO 720 GPS receiver. MapShare allows TomTom users to submitand share their own GPS updates immediately when changing seats or mapping errors are detected. TomTom owners can then choose whether they want to download the client generated changes, or wait for official updates, which are examined by the Company.

In the coming years, it seems certain that the number of GPS navigators on the road continues to expand and new approaches to the sharing of geographic information should be developed. How these processes take place, the cost of the GPS map updates will probably come down, although the quantity and quality of information is increasing.
